Earlier this week I joined Sydney-based food import company Product Distribution for a dinner and drinks at Pok Pok NY to feature their drinking vinegars. Despite the below freezing temperatures around the Red Hook, Brooklyn location, the tasty food, soul-warming drinks, and good company made it worth the bitter trek.

The summer of 2020 is the summer of new beginnings. It’s been such a tumultuous time in our history but I’d like to think that a year like this one is necessary to make room for actual change.

It breaks my heart to see our country fall backwards again and again. Why is this still happening? Why is it so hard to choose love and compassion over hate again ? How is freedom —in this alleged land of the free —still so limited? Why is the value of human life dependent on the color of one’s skin? How are we still getting all of this so wrong?

A collection of memories from this past week at a new outdoor place close to home that we have been utilizing as an escape from the new masked reality. It has been a stressful and maddening time for us but it has encouraged us to create moments like these more often.. to get Theo out of the house and to keep our minds distracted from not having any work for an extended period of time. One day we will actually miss this.

This week we finally reunited with my mom. We went from seeing her every day to not seeing her for two months since she was still working as a med tech every night. Now that she’s furloughed, we have finally been able to include her in our quarantine. She showered us with so much love tonight and brought so much food and it made our home even more complete . . I hope my mom’s friends and coworkers are staying safe and strong. Med techs don’t get to see any patients face to face, but they are certainly essential to helping us fight this virus. We have had many moments this week to show appreciation for our healthcare workers- what has touched me most is to see all the ways that humans have been supporting one another. From volunteering to step up to the frontline of the healthcare industry, to sewing masks from scratch, to even just offering an ear to someone who hasn’t had anyone to chat to for a while— That’s the kind of humanity that I believe will get us through to the other side of this. Thank you for those of you using your talents at this time to fight for us all and thanks to everyone who is social distancing and staying home. Let’s stay positive 🙏🏻

We went through all the novelties of camping without actually camping. Theo got to roast his first marshmallow and make his first s’more.. but preferred eating the deconstructed pre-roasted parts in the end. We breathed in some air and cleared our minds- it was certainly the highlight to an otherwise extremely unproductive week. Rainy weeks are especially hard on the soul at this time and the break from the never ending Groundhog Day is always much needed.

It doesn’t take much to entertain all three of us. I do find us all craving a yard way more in these times. Theo is growing and requiring a little more stimulation than what our home has. But when we presented the idea of moving to a different place he was very adamant that this is his home and he isn’t leaving it. So for now we will stick to our driving outings in search of nature.
